Lee Scherer
Lee R. Scherer was a Captain in the Navy when he started working with NASA, and he joined formally in 1965 following 25 years flying in the Navy. He worked as an Apollo programme director and manager of the Lunar Orbiter Programme from its inception in 1963 through its successful completion in 1967.
In October 1971 Lee became Director of Dryden Space Center, a post he held until 1975, where he went on to direct the Kennedy Space Center. During his tenure there was the Apollo Soyuz Test Project and the early developments that became the Space Shuttle programme. In 1979, he took up an external relations post at NASA Headquarters, during which he co-ordinated Rush’s visit to the Space Shuttle launch with Gerry Griffin. Following his tenure he moved to become senior executive at General Dynamics commercial services group, a post he still occupied in 2000.
