Sam Charters

Sam Charters started as a journalist, and worked up to editor of Canadian rock mag Stage Life. While he was recovering from a car accident, he was approached by Howard Ungerleider to help out on tour. “Howie asked if I’d like a gig with the band, although at the time they weren’t too clear on what it would be,” he recalled in a 1979 interview. The undefinable role that he undertook on the ‘Permanent Waves’ tour became known as “Shreve” (Screvato), in practice this meant doing whatever needed to be done. ‘A Show of Hands’ was dedicated to his memory.
